Young Life Announces New President

It is with a profound sense of the Lord’s presence and leading I announce Newton “Newt” Crenshaw as the board’s selection to succeed Denny Rydberg as president of Young Life.
Newt Crenshaw has a deep history with Young Life as a volunteer, donor, committee chair and member of the Board of Trustees. His parents were involved with the mission at many levels, and Newt and his wife, Susan, continue to carry that torch of passion and support. Professionally, he has built an impressive career as a senior executive with Eli Lilly, based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Newt is a person with intelligence, drive, compassion and, most importantly, a profound love for our Lord. Having lived and worked for Lilly in Kobe, Japan (where he helped establish Young Life), he brings significant international knowledge and experience to his new role. Newt has been a champion for diversity within Lilly and has been personally involved with and supportive of various urban ministries for years. Newt and Susan are a strong team in life and in ministry. For those who know Newt, I am sure you recognize the gift we have in this new leader.
“Given the fact that we served together on the Young Life board, I knew about his remarkable career background and his family’s long love for Young Life. Then, when I received and read his Letter of Interest, he articulated his passion for this position and included his thoughts on many of the components so necessary for the next president: commitment to the Gospel; focus on the single goal of leading kids to Christ; attracting, developing and motivating the best people available to serve; diversity; fundraising; and international, to name a few.”
— Carol Eaton, Trustee, member of the Discernment, Selection and Transition Committee (DSAT)
This thorough and prayer-filled selection process involved a great deal of time, work and wisdom on the part of a committed group of board members. The Discernment, Selection and Transition Committee (DSAT), chaired by Curtis McWilliams, carefully and prayerfully considered a diverse set of candidates from within and outside the mission. They were thorough, thoughtful and did their best to discern and follow the Lord’s leading
Our decision was not easy, but in the end it was clear. I am convinced that the choice of Newt Crenshaw gives us the opportunity to leverage the wisdom and credibility of our current leadership and to continue our efforts to become a mission that reflects the diversity of the body of Christ.
In the coming weeks and months, we as a mission have a historic opportunity to get to know a new president and help him listen and get to know Young Life in new and deeper ways.
And, of course, we will be saying thank you and goodbye to Denny and Marilyn Rydberg, who have served Young Life faithfully and with profound impact. With the Lord’s blessing they leave behind a mission that is healthy, stable and poised for even greater impact in the lives of kids worldwide. Denny will “pass the baton” to Newt on July 15, and make himself available to Newt as needed beyond that point.
In Christ,
John Brandon
Young Life Board of Trustees Chair
